#Color Composition

I want to talk about the color scheme of The Basement Scene in the Killing Of A Sacred Deer ! Because it. Is. Amazing.

The whole thing has something of an under-seawater-quality to it. A damp bluish-green dominates the color palette:

the floor, the pool table cover, Martin's pajamas and his eyes are all of this color, and the white walls and ceiling are bathed in a shadow of the same color.

(i love that they got his eyes to seemingly be greenish as well, it's so pretty)

Steven is just a bit askew from that palette — instead of a lighter blue-green, he's a darker blue-gray, much like the shadows in the recesses of the basement that we see behind Martin. Murkier waters.

But the watery blues, greens, and grays are ripped through by three splashes of red:

the reddish glint of the ceiling light (whoever actually saw that type of lamp ever have a reddish glint, I never have, so here it looks pretty intentional)

the garish red carpet (looks pretty out of place on that green floor, which I presume was the intended effect)

the blood on Martin
